Finish the exterior. Mind the details.
A damaged section or a new look for the whole home. Start with what needs attention, then work through the materials and the places they meet.

The surfaces. And the connections.
Be specific about the area.
Siding covers the exterior walls. Soffit is the underside of an eave; fascia is the face along the roof edge. You don’t need the right terminology to start—describe the location and what you can see from the ground.
Ask about what will be uncovered.
Before replacing a visibly damaged piece, ask how the contractor will check the area behind it and explain the likely cause. Agree on documentation and approval for additional work if concealed damage appears.
Coordinate edges and openings.
List the windows, doors, roof connections, gutters, and exterior fixtures affected by the project. Ask who removes and reinstalls each item, how transitions will be finished, and whether painting or sealing is included.
Useful details to include
- The affected side of the home and type of visible damage
- Material and color information, if you have it
- Whether you want a matching repair or a new exterior finish
- Any roof, gutter, window, or door work happening alongside it

Before you
get started.
Can I request a small repair?
Yes. Describe the size and location of the concern. Small-project availability and any minimum charge are confirmed directly with the contractor.
Will new siding match what is already there?
Ask for an actual sample and a clear explanation of the expected match. Product availability, age, and exposure can affect the finished appearance. Approve the proposed material before it is ordered.
Can I choose any soffit panel?
Have the contractor check the intended ventilation arrangement before replacing soffit. Ask how the proposed panel fits the existing roof and attic design; choosing a finish alone does not answer that question.
Are windows and doors included?
They are not automatically included in an exterior request. Mention any related work, and have the contractor identify what they will handle and what needs a separate provider.
