I lost shingles. Do I need a new roof?
Missing shingles deserve a prompt assessment, even if the ceiling is still dry. Finding a few pieces in the yard does not tell you whether the repair is small or the damage extends further. Start by asking a roofer to identify what is missing and check the surrounding roof.
For an Ogden Valley home, include your town and whether the loss followed wind, falling debris, or something else you observed. If you do not know when it happened, say so.
Will my roof leak if shingles are missing?
It can. Owens Corning explains that blown-off shingles can lead to leaks and interior damage in its shingle wind-resistance information. That does not give a homeowner a reliable number of dry days before a repair is needed.
Arrange an assessment and ask whether temporary protection is necessary. If water is already entering, follow the active-leak guidance and contact an available professional directly.
Can just a few shingles be replaced?
A localized repair may be an option. Before accepting one, ask:
- Is the damage confined to the visible missing pieces?
- Can the neighboring shingles be worked on without damaging them?
- Are the layers beneath the missing shingles intact?
- Is a compatible replacement product available?
- What will the repaired area look like next to the weathered roof?
Request photographs and a written scope. If replacement is recommended, ask what findings make a localized repair unsuitable. Our repair-or-replace guide gives you a way to compare the explanations.
What if the shingles are lifted, curled, or cracked instead?
Describe what you see without deciding the cause. Record when you first noticed the change and whether a recent storm or earlier repair is relevant. Ask the roofer to distinguish damage, condition, and installation concerns in their findings.
Do not lift, pull, or test shingles yourself. A ground-level photo can help start the conversation; it cannot replace a close inspection. For a wider concern after high winds, read the wind-damage guide.
How much does a shingle repair cost?
The count of pieces on the lawn is not a complete repair scope. Ask whether the quote includes access, materials, adjacent damage, temporary work, disposal, and any minimum service charge. Compare what each contractor proposes to fix. We do not publish an invented local price range; the cost guide explains what to ask for in a written estimate.
Will insurance pay for missing shingles?
Coverage requires a review of the cause and policy, not just a photograph of a bare patch. Keep your observations, inspection report, and receipts together. Ask your insurer what it needs and how the deductible applies. See roof replacement and insurance.
Request a repair assessment
Tell us the property area, whether there is an active leak, the approximate roof age if known, and where you can see missing material. Request shingle repair, then confirm appointment details and any inspection charge before a visit.
An on-site assessment is needed to confirm your roof’s condition and the appropriate work.
