Did hail damage my roof?

By Ogden Valley Roofs · Reviewed

A hailstorm is a reason to check for damage, not proof that your roof needs replacing. Document what you can safely see, then ask a roofing professional for an assessment of the roof itself. This page does not report or confirm a recent hail event at your property.

If you are in Huntsville, Eden, Liberty, or another accepted service area, you can submit a request describing the storm and your concern. Inspection availability is confirmed individually.

What might hail damage look like?

Possible clues include new dents in exposed metal, damaged gutters, and changes to shingle surfaces. GAF describes dents, scuffed granules, and shingle bruising in its hail-damage guidance. It also notes that some damage is not obvious to a homeowner.

A dent in a downspout does not establish the condition of every roof slope. Ask the inspector to explain what was found on the roofing material, where it was found, and what evidence supports the proposed work.

What can I document without climbing?

  • The date and approximate time you observed hail at the property.
  • Photos of safely accessible exterior damage and any interior water marks.
  • Hail remaining on the ground, if it is safe to photograph.
  • Which changes you know are new and which you cannot date.
  • Any temporary work already performed and its receipts.

Leave rooftop access and close material checks to the professional. Do not test shingles or climb onto a wet roof to make your request more convincing.

There is no leak. Do I still need an inspection?

If you have a specific reason to suspect damage, ask a roofer whether an inspection is appropriate. A dry ceiling is not an inspection report. Equally, a nearby storm report does not prove your roof was damaged. Describe the observation and let the assessment address the uncertainty.

Our storm-inspection checklist explains the photos, findings, and written scope to request.

Does hail damage always mean a whole new roof?

No blanket answer fits every roof. Ask which areas are affected, whether repair is feasible, and why replacement is being proposed if it is. Have the roofer separate their construction recommendation from any assumption about an insurer’s decision.

If the recommended scope changes after a closer inspection, ask for the new evidence and an updated written estimate. Use the repair-or-replace questions to keep the comparison specific.

Does homeowners insurance cover hail damage?

It may, depending on the policy and damage. The NAIC notes that wind and hail coverage can have exclusions or separate deductibles; check the terms with your insurer. See its roof-coverage explanation and our roof-insurance questions.

Ogden Valley Roofs does not decide coverage, negotiate claims, or promise a free roof. Request help assessing the roof concern, with no obligation to hire. For active water entry, contact an available professional directly.

An on-site assessment is needed to confirm your roof’s condition and the appropriate work.
